Workshop for middle leaders

Transforming Middle Leadership

A series of seven practical workshops to help middle leaders build teams where people can thrive

In brief

Workshop overview

Middle leaders have a significant influence on what it feels like to work in a school.

They are often the people staff turn to first for guidance, support and reassurance. Through their everyday interactions, decisions and behaviours, they shape relationships, communication, trust and the sense of belonging within their teams.

Yet stepping into middle leadership can be challenging. Many middle leaders are promoted because they are excellent teachers or highly skilled practitioners but receive relatively little preparation for the people-leadership aspects of their role. They may find themselves managing difficult conversations, navigating conflict, motivating colleagues and supporting staff wellbeing alongside an already demanding workload.

Transforming Middle Leadership is a practical seven-part development programme designed to strengthen these essential leadership skills.

About this workshop

Summary

Across seven one-hour online workshops, participants explore their role and influence as middle leaders and develop evidence-informed approaches to building belonging, strengthening relationships, managing conflict, recognising and motivating staff, creating psychological safety and supporting colleagues who may be struggling.

Pre-session reading and between-session tasks encourage participants to put their learning into practice between workshops, making the programme an ongoing process of leadership development rather than a series of stand-alone training sessions.

The Seven Workshops

1. Stepping into Middle Leadership

What is the role of the team leader? What kind of leader are you? Explore the transition into leadership, the influence middle leaders have on their teams, and some of the challenges that come with leading others.

2. Creating Belonging Through Shared Purpose

Explore how a strong sense of shared purpose can bring people together, strengthen team identity and help individuals understand how their contribution matters.

3. Building Positive Collegial Relationships and Managing Team Conflict

Learn how trust, respect and everyday civility shape workplace culture — and what middle leaders can do to strengthen relationships within their teams. Develop greater confidence in addressing tensions and disagreements constructively, and preventing unresolved conflict from damaging relationships and team culture.

4. Having Courageous Conversations

How to plan and conduct courageous conversations with team members.

5. Recognition, Appreciation and Motivation

Explore what motivates people at work and how meaningful recognition and appreciation can help staff feel valued and strengthen engagement and commitment.

6. Building Psychological Safety

Understand what psychological safety looks like in practice and how leaders can create teams where people feel able to speak openly, ask for help, contribute ideas, raise concerns and acknowledge mistakes without fear.

7. RU OK? Supporting Your Team at Work

Learn how to recognise when a member of your team may be struggling and how to respond with confidence, empathy and appropriate support.
